Tips for using less fuel
Tips for using less fuel
Automotive We all like to do our bit for environment, and if you follow these simple tips to minimise your car’s fuel consumption, you save your planet and your wallet easily. 1. Get your car serviced regularly. An engine that's being routinely checked-over is far more likely to run smoothly (and thereby use less petrol) than an engine that's been left to rust. 2. Take any unnecessary weight out of your car; the heavier the car is, the more fuel it'll need to pull itself along. If you have a roof-rack, take it off; not only will its weight cost you, the wind-resistance it'll add will, too. 4. Braking suddenly costs fuel, so check the road ahead of you carefully for pedestrians, changes in the traffic lights, and people trying to park before you set off so you have plenty of time to prepare your car. 5. Check your tyres before every journey. If your tyres are under-inflated, your car will need to exert more energy to move it, meaning
it'll cost you more in fuel. 6. If it's possible for you to do so, avoid rush-hour traffic. Constantly stopping and starting is not good for your fuel economy or the environment, and if you have no other choice but to drive at this time, it may actually be cheaper for you in the long run to find an alternative method of transportation. 7. Instead of driving your car to the shop, walk. You'd be surprised if you knew how much of your fuel was wasted on those little trips to the corner shop, meaning that walking will not only boost your health but save your wallet, too. 8. Don't get lost. Unsurprisingly, when you get lost, you waste a lot of fuel trying to get un-lost. The solution: plan your journey before you go and remember to refer to your map and/or GPS system during the journey to save you from making any wrong-turns. 9. Check your car's manufacturing handbook for details concerning which type of engine oil you should be using in your car. Using the wrong type can put extra pressure on your car and,
ultimately, cost you money in fuel. 10. Don't go over the speed limit. Not only is it illegal, but it'll cost you fuel money. 11. Drive smoothly; when you need to slow down, remove your foot from the accelerator in plenty of time, and leave your car in gear (braking abruptly costs fuel!). Your gears are important, too; the higher the gear you’re in, the less fuel you’re going to use, so always make sure you’re in the gear you ought to be in before you set off. 12. 12. While necessary in hot weather, Air-Con isn't the best thing for your fuel consumption: in fact, it's pretty detrimental. If it isn't necessary to use
, don't use it; use your fans instead. Winding your windows down is also problematic because the incoming wind can slow your vehicle down, making it use more fuel. It’s easier to save money and save the environment when you buy a car that’s been designed with the environment in mind.
